
The PMI Heartland Chapter is the Omaha chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMI is one of the world’s largest professional membership associations, with half a million members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. It is a not-for-profit organization that advances the project management profession through globally recognized standards and certifications, collaborative communities, an extensive research program, and professional development opportunities.
This is Cheryl Fizgarrald’s second year on the Board of Directors as Vice President of Membership. Cheryl is a Senior Project Manager at BHMI. She believes the annual Professional Development Day is one of the Heartland chapter’s greatest educational opportunities.
This year, the event will be held on Monday, September 17th at the Embassy Suites LaVista Conference Center and is open to Heartland Chapter members as well as non-members. The event is suitable for a wide spectrum of individuals involved with project management, from those who would like to determine if a career in project management is right for them or are new to the field to those with decades of experience in project management.
It will be a day of networking, opportunities in professional / leadership development, and refinement of project management knowledge and techniques.
For this year’s event, the chapter is bringing in three high-profile keynote speakers:

Cheryl Fitzgarrald is also hosting a book discussion group. The group met in early April to discuss The Lazy Project Manager by Peter Taylor. The next discussion will be held on Tuesday, July 10th. The chapter is currently soliciting suggestions for books (through May 20th), voting between May 21st – June 3rd, and announcing the book to be read on June 4th. WIT holds various events to discuss topics of interest to women in technology. This year, a panel event was held on March 29th at Union Pacific headquarters in Omaha, NE. Lynne Baldwin, President of BHMI, was invited to be a part of a panel discussion among three women in technology about their careers in the technology industry. The panelists each shared their stories of how they had advanced in the industry to the positions they hold today and answered questions from the 100 WIT members in attendance about opportunities, what the future holds, and more.

When Lucy Horpedahl from UNO, one of the new Spring interns, was asked what she values most about her internship with BHMI, she said, “This is the first time I have worked a computer-related job and have had the opportunity to apply what I am learning in class.” She went on to say, “I have found that my class curriculum doesn’t always coincide with how things are done at work, so I value the exposure I am gaining to the real world.”
